Digital Twinning

Simply put, a digital twin is a virtual representation of a real or planned object that is used to consume connected data.

I like to think of it as a digital container. You can connect all sorts of data but the key question to answer is: why exactly do you need to consume data?
The answer to that question is almost never singular. The container could also change form depending on the use. For instance: a digital twin of a construction site could include physical planning objects (clear work spaces, onsite material storage) or building components could be separated based on progress payouts to analyze cost.
They would be for different purposes, informed from different sources, looking to achieve a different type of digital interaction with a planned or active construction site. Similar duplicity exists concerning digital twins for building design and product manufacturing.
By focusing on the purpose, and not feeling all must be done at once, it becomes easier to find your way forward with digital twin technology while also creating tangible business value.
